As part of the Three Zeros Environmental Initiative, UNC is committed to reducing our potable, or drinkable, water use.
The University has implemented low-water fixtures, such as automatic sinks, low-flow shower heads, and dual-flush toilets in order to improve water conservation efforts. Carolina Dining Services has also supported the Three Zeros Environmental Initiative by using water-saving dish washers and removing trays from the dining halls, conserving the water used for washing trays. Other facilities also use water-saving dish washers, washing machines and lab equipment. Grounds Services has planted low-maintenance, water-retentive landscapes and installed irrigation systems that apply water directly to the plant to eliminate evaporative losses.
