On Tuesday, Sept. 25, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will hold its second-annual Three Zeros Day, celebrating waste, water and greenhouse gas reduction on campus. The events include a fair on Polk Place from 11 a.m.- 2 p.m., highlighting how the University is making progress in each of those areas, as well as a reception that evening, which will recognize a student who has shown leadership in reducing the Three Zeros.
During the day, the Three Zeros Environmental Initiative will host a celebration with interactive displays on Polk Place concerning zero waste, water and greenhouse gas initiatives from on- and off-campus partners. Maple View Farms will be handing out ice cream to those who provide feedback on environmental issues on campus. Students, faculty and staff are invited to learn first-hand how the University is working to reduce its carbon footprint and have a positive impact on the surrounding community. There will also be a scavenger hunt across campus, beginning at the Edible Campus Garden, and highlighting different sustainable features. When participants finish the scavenger hunt, they can return their guide to the Three Zeros Day event in exchange for a reusable water bottle. This year we have combined efforts with Transportation and Parking to also include the annual Transportation Fair during the event on Polk Place, where the campus community can learn about alternative transportation options provided by UNC-Chapel Hill and the Town of Chapel Hill which save money and reduce the University’s environmental footprint.
The evening reception will feature speakers from across campus who have seen the positive impact Three Zeros has had on the campus and community during the last two years. Additionally, the first annual Three Zeros Environmental Leadership Award will be given to the student from the 2017-18 academic year who has demonstrated leadership in the areas of waste, water or greenhouse gas reduction.
